Southern Africa Region History

The Community Review Panel (CRP) met in Malawi on February 22 - 24th. The panel members at the meeting were:

Njogu Morgan, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), South Africa
Delma Cupido, AIDS Law Project, Namibia
Gcebile Ndlovu, ICW, Swaziland
Chatinkha C. Kumwenda, Coordinator of meeting,  Malawi

The meeting participants discussed the composition of CRP. They will seek additional representation from Swaziland, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, and the Seychelles for a total of number of 9 - 11 members. They also discussed the composition of the committee and determined that due to the epidemic severely impacting women and girl children within this region, women must represent half of the CRP membership. In addition,  at least one third of the membership should be comprised of People Living with HIV/AIDS who are open about their status. Finally, it was decided that one-third of CRP should be staff or representatives of member-based organizations. Representatives from governments, pharmaceutical companies or donor organizations are not eligible for CRP membership. A grant application was developed and the application was distributed.

The grant applications were reviewed by the CRP in Namibia and 21 grantees were chosen.  After the grant round, Njogu Morgan decided to return to school to pursue a graduate degree and a new regional coordinator was chosen.  Tapiwanashe Kujinga is now our current regional coordinator for Southern Africa.

In 2006, Southern Africa hosted a workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa, bringing together over 50 activists from the region.  The workshop's purpose was to reinvigorate the Southern Africa process and choose a new set of CRP members.  The new CRP members are:

Kate Musima - Zambia
Irene Cossa - Mozambique
Francina Nyirenda - Malawi
Gcebile Ndlovu - Swaziland

The CRP decided to use the second cycle of grantmaking to regrants to a limited number of grantees and roll the remaining grant money from 2006 to the next grant cycle.  Please see below for the 2006 Southern Africa Grant Summaries
